What is zinc?

Zinc is a trace mineral found in every cell of the body. It is used for cell and membrane formation, making it essential for growth, reproduction, and wound healing. It also helps maintain our sense of taste and smell.

New research suggests that zinc plays a greater function in the immune system, and can be used as an effective testosterone booster. Researchers are also investigating the role zinc plays in the prevention of osteoporosis, cancer, and heart disease.

Why is it important?

Zinc is a necessary part of our daily diets, especially for growing children and pregnant women. Since it is important in cell and membrane formation, zinc deficiencies can lead to growth retardation and impaired immune function. A diagnosed zinc deficiency can cause diarrhea, hair loss, delayed sexual maturation, impotence, hypogonadism in males, and eye and skin lesions. 

How to increase your zinc intake

Zinc can be found in all cuts of chicken and other meats. The dark meat from chicken is especially rich in this mineral. Did you know that one chicken leg contains 18% of a woman’s daily recommended intake of zinc?

Zinc can also be found in many plant-based sources such as wheat germ, nuts, and dried beans.
