Making the Perfect Fried Chicken Sandwich

Place that fried chicken between two fresh buns and add your favourite toppings and you’ve got a sandwich you won’t soon forget.

Fried chicken – you know its crispy, crunchy coating, tender interior and delectable flavour. How could it get any better? Place that chicken between two fresh buns and add your favourite toppings and you’ve got a sandwich you won’t soon forget.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare your sandwich. First is the cut of chicken to use. Boneless, skinless pieces are easiest as they don’t require any deboning and can be transferred directly to the sandwich. Chicken thighs are best as the dark meat has higher moisture retention during the frying process, making for a juicier sandwich.

Next – the bun. A toasted bun goes a long way, adding flavour and texture. Spread a thin layer of butter on the insides of the bun and toast butter-side down in a pan over medium heat until slightly crispy and golden. When it comes to toppings, think about the flavours you want complementing the chicken. Do you want the smokiness of bacon, savoury cheese or the crunch and tang of coleslaw? The answer can be yes to all three. Just don’t forget the pickles! Finally – the sauce. Are you in the mood for sweet honey mustard or spicy garlic aioli? Or – don’t overthink it – stick with classic mayo and you can’t go wrong.

Whatever you’re craving, there’s a fried chicken sandwich that is sure to satisfy. You can customize as you go and don’t be afraid to experiment.
