Avian Influenza

While avian influenza has become a global concern over the past few years, it has been on the radar of farmers for decades.

Canadian chicken farmers work closely with industry, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and other federal and provincial government departments on many issues, including avian influenza. We are all working hard to protect the food supply.

Here’s what you need to know about avian influenza:

Avian influenza has never been passed on to humans as the result of eating properly cooked chicken. Avian influenza is not a foodborne disease. In the very unlikely event that a bird with Asian avian influenza should get to the marketplace, it’s good to know the simple fact that cooking kills the virus.

“Bird flu” is not the same thing as human pandemic flu. Human cases of the Asian form of bird flu have occurred in other countries but there has been, in most cases, a direct link to diseased poultry.
