Agriculture Policy in Canada

“Growing Forward: Toward a New Agriculture Policy Framework” was officially launched in 2007 with three rounds of consultations. It followed on from where the APF (Agriculture Policy Framework left off and will serve as the action plan that will guide the creation of a new national agriculture policy.

The framework is based on the six key thematic areas: Food Safety and Quality, Markets and Trade, Environment, Renewal, Science and Innovation and Business Risk Management (BRM). CFC took the opportunity in the spring of 2008 to appear before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture to discuss Growing Forward and some of our priority areas.

CFC’s focus was on the recognition of supply management as a BRM program, inadequate disaster coverage and government/industry cost-sharing for those numerous on-farm programs that provide both an industry benefit and a public good, such as food safety, biosecurity and traceability.

After many years, the policy framework now recognizes supply management as a BRM program. CFC continues to work with government on other areas such as disaster programs and poultry research.
